Better Than Sidewalks

path

Sidewalks are handy,
But I like a trail,
Where I might see rabbits
Or lizards or quail.

Buildings are useful,
But I like a tree
And all the green stillness
It offers—for free.

Bustling cities
Have plenty to do,
But I’d rather be
Where the noises are few.

Cars get there faster,
But I’ll use my feet
To follow a trail
Where the slowness is sweet.

A street makes a sturdy
And smooth way to pass,
But I love the feel
Of a walk in the grass.

I’m glad we have sidewalks,
But I’ll stay alert
For chances to follow
A path in the dirt.
